Resources for raising your special needs child

There is so, so much to cover on this topic, and I plan to cover everything I’ve learned, especially when it comes to getting the IEP your child needs. But I decided to go ahead and publish what I have rather than wait until I’ve written the equivalent of the great American novel, so check back soon for more. And don’t be afraid to ask a question in the comments below a post if there’s something I haven’t covered — especially while I’m still building this out. If I don’t know, I’ll try to find out enough to point you in the right direction.

The first thing to know is that this is my passion.

School districts operate on extremely tight budgets, and Special Ed services are expensive. So you can’t count on the good will of your school district to offer every service your child is entitled to. Unfortunately, parents who don’t understand IDEA and the rights it bestows on their child often get the bare minimum. I’m committed to helping as many parents as possible learn how to get the IEP their child needs. (I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with some outstanding educators and administrators — but there were still little things I wouldn’t have caught if I hadn’t educated myself.)

Patti Podnar 50ish with a Full Nest

Hi, I’m Patti. I’m also 50ish, and I still have three teens at home (thus the full nest!). I’m committed to helping parents of special needs children get the very best IEP they can. I’m also passionate about the things I learned caring for my parents in their last few years.

I’ve written professionally most of my adult life, and I’m really excited about the opportunity to write in my own voice (especially since I’m much funnier in writing than in person). So I hope you can find both useful information as well as entertainment here.
